CARS PARKED IN BLACK-OUT
PROBLEM DISCUSSED BY MOTORISTS Lighting of parked cars during black-out hours in Christchurch is still under consideration by the Automobile Association (Canterbury); but it is waiting for more information on the City Council traffic department’s attitude before taking further action. A report yesterday reviewed the case presented for motorists in the Magistrate’s Court when prosecutions for leaving cars unlighted in the blackout were heard. “There are two sides to this question,” said Mr F. W. Freeman. Il was all very well to say that some owners had to’ leave cars on the road .over nieht because they had no garages. 1 “There are many people who will i never build a garage.” he said. “If you j were a member of a local body you would realise the problem.” Mr W. F. Harley said the travelling pub’ic frequently found difficulty in finding garage accommodation. The secretary <Mr J. S. Hawkes) ■said his chief objection was that the requirements were not uniform throughout the country. More prosecutions were pending. In i fairness to members who were expected to have cars lighted all night I the associdV’on should take the matter i furtner. said Mr G. W. Tench. AlterI native schemes of lighting should be i considered. The chairman (Mr L. W. Broadhead) said that personally he could- ! not see the danger. A moving car | should pick out an unlighted parked vehicle. 1 Danger existed for cyclists, said Mr iE. R. Casbolt. Apart from that, any . other obsl ruction on the road had to be lighted. The association s-ient a lot on safety propaganda and yet. was inconsistent in opposing the precautions sought by the City Council.
