VISUAL ARTS COUNCIL
PROPOSED NATIONAL BODY (New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND. May 5. A proposal for the establishment of a permanent visual Arts Council of New Zealand has been sent for consideration to the Minister of Education (Mr R. M. Algie) and the National Council of Adult Education by the Auckland Society of Arts. The society recommends the formation of a body to co-ordinate, direct, and advise on all national visual art matters. It states that such a body could function effectively only with the assistance of the Government.
The council should advise and make recommendations to the National Council of Adult Education and other bodies and negotiate with persons and organisations on matters pertaining to the visual arts, the society said. It should also formulate policies and activities. It is recommended that the council should consist of eight members, representing the Education Department the New Zealand Art Galleries and Museums’ Association, the University Schools of Art. the National Council of Adult Education, the Association of New Zealand Art Societies, and the National Gallery, Wellington. The society also urges that local art societies be represented on all regional councils. Branches of the New Zealand Institute of Architects should also be represented.
