RESTRICTIONS ON POWER

Sir, —The decisions approved by the power emergency committee are unjust and a discredit to municipal councillors, while the defensive statements of the Mayor (Mr E. H. Andrews), the hydro-electric district engineer (Mr W. H. Gregory), and Cr. L. G. Amos are a shameful travesty of their social resoonsibilities. The proposed enforcement of these decisions means simply that the working people of this city are to be encumbered with restrictions to preserve electric power for avaricious business groups. The working people are to bear the brunt to prevent any embarrassment to private enterprise. Water heating is prohibited for six hours a day, involving mainly—housewives. Offices are closed by the time rediators are prohibited—implicating old-age pensioners, students and invalids. Window signs and neon light advertising-—extended use! Non-essential industries are unmentinned! The municipal election needs progressive candidates who will alter this inequitable scourge.—Yours, etc., P. SWITHIN. April 1, 1950.
