ADDINGTON FORM

VEDETTE’S EASY WIN IN PLAINS HANDICAP

Backed down to the shortest price of me day, Vedette justified his confident support when he romped home an easy winner in the Plains Handicap at the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club’s meeting at Addington on Saturday. Starshell and Caledonia Gold, bqth visi,r.s. from Auckland, were never possibilities after breaking at the start. Proprietor was the early leader fropi Ikaroa, Nebula, Fortuna, Paraw? Derby, and Vedette. Nebula soon took the lead, and she wgs followed at the end of fopr furlongs by Vedette, which had accelerated quickly from the 24 yards mark. Proprietor, Ikaroa, Fortuna, Sir Peterson. Parawa Derby, Mobile Globe, Gold Strand, and Fitnesse. Except that Parawa Derby and Prince Hall had irpproved their positions to follow Nebpla, Vedette, and Proprietor, the order remained much the same for more than a mile and a half.

After taking the lead with more than two furlongs to go, Vedette gave nothing else a chance at the finish, winning with something in reserve in 4mip J 7 l-ssec. Vedette, which wop his first race at the Oamaru Trotting- Club’s meeting on October 24, has rapidly advanced through his classes, his win on Saturday taking him to a 4min 26sec mark. One of the most improved pacers seen out this season, Vedette, which has gained seven wins and. eight minor placipgs in his 16 starts this season, should have little trouble in graduating to Cup class this year. Consistent

Perpetpa, a consistent Springfield Globe mare from H. J. Smith’s Halswell stable, brought her record to two wins and six mxpor placings in her eight starts for the season when she won the Papanui Handicap easily from Worthy Ace. Perpetija’s task was made difficult when she was hampered by the breaking Lady Mavourneen in the early stages. Once spe was clear, R. Young soon made up his lost groimq with Perpetna, which was leading with six furlongs to go from Aqua Lady, Demetrius, Goldsmith, which broke sdon afterwards, Vigilant, FarnGreat Wonder, Merrymaker, and Worthy Ace.

After leading into the straight, Rerpetua carried on to win in fine style from Worthy Ace, which gave a splendid perlormance after striking .trouble early. After inquiring into the running of the Papanui Handicap, the stipendiary stewards found (1) that Melvian, driven by A. Motz, broke without interference from any other horses, that Melvian fell, and his driver, Motz, was thrown out of the sulky, that this caused interference to Joygiver, driven by P. P. Gallagher, who was also thrown out of the sulky; (2) that Lady Mavoqrneen broke, causing interference to Perpetua and Worthy Ace, which also broke. Finished Fast

Barrier Reef, the winner of the Intermediate Handicap on the first day of the meeting, gave a solid performance to win the Reta Peter Handicap. Mine Host quietly, and at tfie end of three furlongs he was 10 lengths clear of Bancor (in a break), Barrier Reef, Keen Blade, Sure Harvest, Tatsydale, Conceit, Jason’s Quest, and Single Task, which lost much ground when she broke at the start.

After leading for more than six furlongs, Mine Host started to feel the strain, and he was passed by Barrier Reef. These two were followed down the back straight by Sure Harvest, Keen Blade, Desworthy, Morning Wings, Belshazzar, and Fantorh.

Barrier Reef sustained a strong finishing run over the last half mile to win by three lengths from Sure Harvest, with the fast-finishing Fantom in third place. On the form he has shown at the meeting, Barrier Reef should not be disgraced in free-for-all company. Vigorously Driven Vigorously driven by D. C. Watts, Blue Mist, which was under the whip a long way from home, stayed on well to win the President’s Handicap by a length and a half from Victory Dale. Worthy Jack and Josedale Audubon brolre at the start. Gay Note was the first to show out, and he led at the end of two furlongs from Constsllatioh, Victory Dale, Worthy Dick (in a break), Rail Ace, Sgottjsh Brogue, Blue Mist, and Red Emperor. Gay Note and Flying Smith both made mistakes in the running, and with six furlpngs to go Ben’s Son was leading from Blue Mist, Victory Dale, Palava, Hall Ace, Constellation, and Gay Note. After following Ben’s Son into the straight, Blue Mist soon settled the issue, winning comfortably from Victory Dale, which shaded Ben’s Son in a photo-finish for second.

Blue Mist has to be kept up to her work all the way. Once she reaches top speed, she has more ability than most in- her class. She should soon win again. Sesamoid Bone Broken

During the running of the New Zealand Pacing Stakes at Addington on Saturday, Gowan Globe, which was driven by A. Motz. faltered, and he was pulled up. An examination by a veterinary surgeon disclosed a fractured sesamoid bone. The horse was removed from the track in a float, the owner, Mr J. R. Jones, having decided to save the horse for stud purposes. An inquiry showed that Gowan Globe received no interference. At Waimate Queen of Scots was* easily the most impressive of the pacers at the Waimate Racing Club’s annual meeting on Saturday. The six-year-old U. Scott mare won ier divisions of the Morven Trot Handicap and the Hook Trot Handicap without -.e.ng extended. In the first division of the Morven Trot he soon took over the pacemaking and vas never headed. She put a break on the field with six furlongs to run, and Increased her lead until she reached the post, her winning margin being 20 lengths. The Waimate trained Filament led the □ther.i home. She was two lengths ahead of Swlthindale at the finish. Anitra was a moderate foqrth.

A rehandicap of 24 yards did not trouble Queen of Scots in the second division of the Hook Trot. She made up her ground smoothly, and after trailing Trugleen and Colinova along the back, §he ran to the front, and won by three lengths from Major Gaillard, which followed the winner into the straight. Colinova battled on for third, two lengths further back,, with Trueleen fading into fourth place. ,' Ferry Pilot was never further back than .fourth irt the second division of the Morven Trot, and he finished best in the straight to win by three lengths from .Cplipova, which had made must Pf the pace. Free Alecia made un ground from the half rmfle to fill third place, but sfig was six lengths behind Colinova. Fe.-ry Pilot is a five-year-old chestnut gelding by Ringtrue from Lady Noona, and is raced in partnership by Messrs J. J. Brosnan and CT. E. Smith. He is trained and Was driven on Saturday by Brosnan. Mountain Qem created a surprise bv wjnning the first division qf tfie Hook Trot) He won by six lengths, but' his task was eased by Free Alecia. the run-ner-up. breaking at the start.
