LIFE INSURANCE AND DEATH DUTIES
Sir. —in saying that widow can be left with up to £5OOO before any death duties are deducted.” your correspondent was correct, but not so when she said that “insurance moneys are never touched.” If her estate had been £4300 in value plus £lOOO (the amount of insurance, money I quote), making the value of the whole estate over the £5OOO limit, estate duty would be payable on the va’ue qf the estate less the amount of the difference between that value and £l'o 000. Thus it is easily seen that such insurance money does not escape the duty and the matter still remains one for the National Government “to wipe off the Statute Book.”—Yours, etc., WIDOW. Oxford. March 6. 1950.
