KING LEOPOLD OF BELGIUM
CHURCH ATTITUDE T( REFERENDUM
PRIESTS’ WARNING TO CONGREGATIONS
BRUSSELS, March 5. Priests in many Belgian Roman Catholic churches to-day warned their congregations against the “dangers" of voting against the return of King Leopold Tn the national referendum to be held on March 12. About 90 per cent, of Belgians are Roman Catholic, and Church references to King Leopold are expected to have a considerable effect on the voting.
The congregation of one Brussels church was told that those who were campaigning against the King’s return were “systematically lying to cover up the truth in accordance with the teachings of Marxist Communism.” In Liege to-day Mr-Andree Renard, an official of Belgium's largest trade union, the Socialist-dominated General Federation of Labour, said that the union would call on Belgian workers to oppose King Leopold’s return “with all their might.”
