Hospital Staffs
The Government’s decision to restore the right >f hospital boards to appoint senior medical and other staff is welcome. It should help to remove friction between the Jocal hospital administrators and the central controlling authorities in Wellington which has become increasingly marked since the last Government amended the Hospitals Act to give the Minister of Health the final say in senior staff appointments. Since the change was made in 1948 there have been frequent delays in filling posts in hospital administration through the department the hospital boards being unable to agree. The denial to hospital boards of the right to make senior staff appointments was part of the last Government’s policy of centralising control of hospital and medical services at Wellington under the Department of Health. The present Government is committed, by its election policy, to “ the complete “ reorganisation ” of the hospital administration in New Zealand on “a “ new system based on regional con- “ trol and decentralisation A useful first step has been taken in this direction. t
