87 DEGREES IN CHRISTCHURCH

Christchurch sweltered yesterday. Although the temperature narrowly missed being the highest this year, the heat was so sustained throughout the day that most people were certain that new records must have been set. For 45 minutes —from 12.45 to 1.30 the thermometer at the Christchurch Geophysical Observatory did not vary from the maximum of 87.3 degrees. On January 11 it reached a peak of 88.5 degrees for a short period. The day broke fine and clear, and b - 9 a.m. the reading was 71.4 degrees. The temperature mounted steadily toward midday and by 3.30 p.m. it had dropped back only to 84 degrees. Tne weather office at the Royal New Zealand Air Force Station.
