What is a bookmaker? The Gaming Act of 1908 helpfully defines a bookmaker as a person who carries on business as a bookmaker. It brings in others as well, such as agents and clerks, but for the bookmaker himself the legal mind in 1908 could think of nothing more descriptive than this. Attention was drawn to the definition in the Magistrate’s Court, New Viymouth, by Mr R. D. Jamieson.
