ECONOMIC AID TO SOUTH KOREA
Mr Acheson Appeals For Continuance ■
HOUSE COMMITTEE URGED TO ACT
(R * C - ® **•> WASHINGTON, Jan. 30. The United States Secretary of State (Mr Dean Acheson) to-day asked the Foreign Affairs Committee of the House of Representatives to support a new effort to provide economic aid to South Korea
Mr Acheson said: “To stop aid now would be a most unfortunate thing. It would undo all the efforts that have been put into Korea." Mr Acheson added that, if aid to South Korea were stopped, it would raise questions in South Korea ana South-east Asian territories about the extent and consistency of the American interest in the area. [The House of Representatives recently rejected by one vote a bill which would have given South Korea economic aid amounting to 60,000,000 dollars. The Senate now has passed an amended bill extending the termination date of the 60.000.000-dollar aid funds from February until June 30. The Administration will submit this bill to the House.!
