ROSE SHOW

NEW VARIETY AS CHAMPION

GOOD COMPETITION IN DECORATIVE CLASSES Although the entries were fewer than last year the quality of the roses exhibited at the Canterbury Horticultural Society’s rose and cut flower show, wh\ch opened at the Caledonian Hail yesterday, was much improved. A number of new varieties, one of which was judged the champion rose of the show, adaed interest to the display. The judge in the open section (Mr M. J. Barnett) said tne roses were particularly clean and fresh ana of good form and substance. The freshness was no doubt partly because of the recent cool weather, but also to a large extent a tribute to the ability of the growers, he said. There were 123 exhibits, compared with 168 last year. A beautifully-formed rose of a lemon yellow colour, with pink-edged petals, exhibited by N. E. Taylor, was judged champion rose and champion of the open section. This rose, named Peace, has not been exhibited at the show before. It was bred in France by Francis Meilland, and has won premier bloom awards in the United States. It was introduced m this country about two years ago. Other new varieties on show were Edith Krause, of an off white colour, the Italian-raised Saturnia, and the cerise Rosaleen Dunn. The older varieties were well represented, and the most popular were probably McGredy’s Yellow, and Crimson Glory. There were a number of exhibits of the 50-year-old Frau Karl Druschki, and Florence Izard appeared for the first time for many years. The premier bloom award in the amateur rose section was won by B. Lloyd’s McGredy’s Yellow, and that in the novice class by Mrs R. H. Nottingham's Shot Silk. There were some very fine arrangements in the decorative section, in- which the competition was better than usual. Entries totalled 83, compared with 48 last year. The award for ths most outstanding exhibit in the section was won by Mrs A. G. Lake, with an attractive setting of delphiniums, red roses, clematis, Argentine peas, and iris leaves in a jug. Of the displays, which were an outstanding feature of the show, O. W. B. Anderson’s stand of peonies was a centre of admiration. Several persons said they had never seen a better display. The display won the Morse Cup. Fine displays were also provided by G. Franklin’s delphiniums, G. W. Skellerup’s shrubs and lilies, and C. Stokell’s orchids. The horticultural department of Canterbury Agricultural College, Lincoln, showed an interesting exhibit, explaining for the home gardener the seed, cuttings, budding, and grafting methods of propagation. The show will continue at 10 o’clock this morning. Awards and Cups Special awards were made as follows: E. Henry Morse and Son Cup for display of peony roses: O. W. B. Anderson.
