SAMOA OBSERVATORY VISITED

GEOPHYSICAL RESEARCH Mr J. W. Beagley, director of the Christchurch Geophysical Observatory, returned to Christchurch yesterday after a three weeks’ visit to the branch observatory at Apia, Western Samoa. As the Apia sub-observatory was being operated by a smaller European staff than was formerly the case, more work was oeing done at the observatory in Christchurch, which co-ordin-ated geophysical research at Apia, Rarotonga, and Campbell Island, said Mr Beagley. It was, therefore essential that close liaison should be maintained.

While in Apia Mr Beagley arranged for the Apia radio station to join in the reporting of radio circuit conditions for *the purpose of correlation with geophysical phenomena. One of the main points of investigation is the relationship between Dellinger fadeouts, solar flares and geomagnetic pulses. Since his last visit six months ago, Mr Beagley said he had noticed that the Government of Western Samoa was taking progressive steps to improve roading conditions in and round Apia, and in addition had a comprehensive building programme in hand.
