PARKS AND RESERVES
PREPARATIONS FOR SUMMER FLOWERS
Planting out in preparation for the summer display of flowers in Christchurch parks and reserves is now in full swing. According to a statement yesterday by the director of parks and reserves (Mr M. J. Barnett), the programme is of about normal proportions. About 100,000 plants will be used over the Botanic Gardens and all reserves, and of these between 60,000 and £70.000 have already been transplanted. The planting of the city garden plots was almost complete, said Mr Barnett, but there was still a considerable amount to do in parks such as those at New Brighton and Sumner. While conditions had improved for planting after the recent rains, Mr Barnett said the soil was still very dry, the surface only being moist.
