29 CRIMES IN 26 DAYS
MAN WHO ESCAPED FROM PRISON
HIT BY WARDER’S SHOT WHILE FLEEING (New Zealand. Press Association.) AUCKLAND, November 7. Twenty-nine crimes committed in. Auckland in 26 days after his escape from the Auckland prison were admitted by Thomas william James in the Magistrate’s Court to-day. A justice of the peace committed him to the Supreme Court for sentence. Janies appeared in court handcuffed to a constable. He chuckled two or three times while evidence was being given. An account of his actions between his escape and his departure in a stolen car for Wellington was given by James in a confession.* He and another man. while sheltering in a prison shed from rain, made a break on the afternoon of August 26. James, who was outpaced by his companion, was fired at and knocked to the ground by pellets. He ran on into the bush, lyina low most of the day. He converted cars at night and drove round. He broke into five houses, searching fnr food. He was arrested after a struggle at New Plymouth.
