WESTERN MAORI SEAT
FIFTH CANDIDATE
LABOUR NOMINEE NOT YET ANNOUNCED (New Zealand Press Association.) AUCKLAND. November 7. Although the Labour Party has not yet chosen a candidate for Western Maori to replace the late Mr M. Ratana, there are already five candidates in the field. The latest to declare himself is Mr R. R. M. Amohanga. of Kihikihi. who has announced that he will contest the seat as an Independent. He was born at Te Kui*i 55 years ago and is a descendant of the famous Maori warrior Rewi Maniapoto. During the First World War he served overseas as an officer. Mr Amohanga has unsuccessfully stood for the Western Maori *eat on previous occasions. The other candidates are Mr H. Mar: maru (National). Mrs K. Nutana (Kauhar.eanui Independent Maori Party). Mr Tan Wilson (Independent Labour), and Mr Taneti Tana (Tnde> nendent). There were 13 candidates for the seat at the 1946 election, when Mr Ratann had a majority of 6491 votes. The Labour Party has nine days in which to chorpp its candidate.
