U.S. carriers against SUBMARINES ( Rec- 7 R’ 2 ”* NEW YORK, Nov. 6. The Lnited States Navy ended its four days anti-submarine manoeuvres with its North Atlantic carrier task forces just about fought to a standstill by a submarine pack that hounded them along a 720-mile track,” says the United Press. “Vice-Admiral D. B. Duncan was overall commander and umpire of the manoeuvres. The anti-submarine forces, which split into three task forces, ‘destroyed 21 submarines at a cost of 12 ships, including three carriers.’
“Heavy seas kept the carrier aeroplanes on the decks for the first two days. Shore-based patrol bombers provided the fleet’s big anti-submarine punch { n good and bad weather. They ‘bagged’ 14 submarines, carrier aeroplanes two, and destroyers five.”
