CLEARCUT WIN AT WINTON

FULL PLAY SHOWS SPEED IN SPRINT

Making only her second appearance in open company, All Alone proved much too good for the strong middle distance field she met in the Soldiers’ Memorial Handicap at the Winton Jockey Clubs spring meeting on Saturday. it was her first win for Mr N. W. D. Beck, who bought her for a four-figure ‘price from T. Deegan in July. With a mile to run, All Alone was near the tail of the field, and into the back she had made up little ground. Racing to the half-mile she came into the picture when she took fourth place behind Bragden, which had been four lengths clear at the five furlongs. Special Flight and Billy Mac. Merry Lancer, Some Sal, Sir Garnish, and Mount Barker were heading the others at the half mile with a gap to the favourite, Excellency. Bragden gave ground quickly after passing the half mile, and at the straight Special Flight. Billy Mac, and. Al] Alone were racing in line clear of Some Sal, Merry Lancer, Mount Barker, Excellency. She is trained at Invercargill by R. E. McLellan. Sprint to Geisha Girl Geisha Girl, a Six-year-old mare by Man’s Pal from Tea Gown, won the Stewards’ Purse Handicap from end to end at Winton.

After a furlong Geisha Girl was clear of Mr Micawber and Sterling Lad, with a break to Jan, Frances, Sea Flower, Nigger Lad, and Full Play, which was chopped back at the start.

Floresta took no part in the race and Sad Sonntag and Flip were slow away. Sirocco and Purple Sage took up the running from Salazar, Rosehaven, Fine Art, Angelas, and Dunkirk, with Fast Flight at the head of the others. Sirocco and Purple Sage led for the run home from Dunkirk, which came through on the inner, Rosehaven, Salazar, and Sad Sonntag. The Italian-bred horse, Duccio, has been purchased in England by xVlr J. L. Macky, jun., Pirongia, Waikato. Duccio was bred in Italy by the successful breeder, Mr Federico Tesio, who has won 19 Italian Derbys with horses of which many have subsequently proved notable sires. Among them was the champion sire, Nearco.

Duccio was purchased towards the end of his three-year-old career by Mr W. Harvey, England. He won six races in Italy as a two and three-year-old, and was considered the second best two-year-old of his year. At three years he won the Premio Principe Emanuele Filiberto, one mile and a quarter, from Tenerani, winner of the Italian Derby and St. Leger. Duccio is by Bellini, the best two-year-old of his year, and at three years the winner of the Italian Derby, St. Leger, and Premio del Jockey Club, and the Braun Riband of Germany. He sired Tenerani, which is leased by the National Stud, and the unbeaten two-year-old Naucide, which is now at the stud in England at a fee of 400 guineas.
