DERBY DAY AT ADDINGTON

Burns Night’s Success OLLIVIER HANDICAP WON BY DUNDEE SANDY Loyal Nurse and Dundee Sandy, which had finished first and lastf in the New Zealand Jubilee Cup on the first day of the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club’s Cup meeting, gave a striking illustration of the uncertainty of racing when they reversed placings in the Ollivier Handicap, the main event on the programme for the second day of the meeting at Addington on Saturday. A brilliant track worker at Addington for V. Alborn, who trains him for Mr B. Rushton (Nightcaps), Dundee Sandy disappointed his connexions when he faded out of the picture after setting the pace for just over a mile and a half in the Jubilee Cup. On Saturday, Dundee Sandy was in third place on the rails when the field settled down, and he was forced to race in that position for most of the way. Once he got a clear run in the straight, Dundee Sandy finished with a rare burst of speed to beat Checkmate by a head in a photo-finish. The ninth favourite in a field of 14 betting chances, Dundee Sandy, which had not won since he beat Great Belwin in the Au Revoir Handicap at the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club’s meeting on April 5, 1947, returned his supporters a win dividend approaching £4O. Loyal Nurse never appeared as a possibility after starting from the 72 yards mark. After her win in the Jubilee Cup, Loyal Nurse was acclaimed as the “pacing queen” by the president of the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club, Mr C. S. Thomas, but her reign will be shortlived, as she will probably be retired after the Cup meeting.

Follow Me backed out as the barrier was released, and Loyal Peter and Maudeen both lost ground when they failed to strike their gait quickly. At the end of the first half-mile, the hard-pulling Checkmate was leading from Lady Averil, Plunder Bar, Dundee Sandy, Globe Direct, Ingle Belmer, Commander Scott, Sprayman, Attack, Knave of Diamonds, and Single Direct, with, gaps tc- Loyal Nurse, Maudeen, and Loyal Peter.

Gantree was driven by M. Holmes, whose reinsmanship has been a feature of the meeting. Besides Gantree, Holmes, who drove Conceit, Casacando, and Gantree to u’in on the first day of the meeting. was successful with Chamfer and Islaburn Lass on Saturday.

The totalisator handled £147,080, compared with £152,658 10s on the second day last year. Results:— NOVEMBER HANDICAP, Of £950. 4min 32sec class. Two miles. 4. 4—A. Ingle Belmer improved her position to race up to Checkmate and, with a mile to go, these two were followed by Lady Averil, Plunder Bar, Dundee Sandy, Globe Direct, Commander Scott, Sprayman, and Attack. Ingle Belmer weakened with more than five furlongs to go, and at the end of a mile and a half the order was Checkmate, Lady Averil, Single Direct, Attack, Dundee Sandy, and Commander Scott.

Checkmate appeared as the likely winner as he led into the straight clear of the field, but Alborn sent Dundee Sandy after him. Pacing in his best style, Dundee Sandy thrilled the crowd as he gradually reduced the gap. As the horses flashed past the winning post, the judge, Mr F. A. Jarrett, called for a photo-finish print, which showed Dundee Sandy to have a head advantage. “Dundee Sandy did everything right to-day; I felt confident of winning when he was racing well in a good position with three furlongs to go,” said V. Alborn, who predicted before the meeting that Dundee Sandy was back to his best form. Checkmate was not disgraced in defeat. A winner in fast time on the first day, Checkmate should win another race at the meeting for Mr H. C. Steel. Derby Stakes to Bums Night Paraded in splendid order and confidently handled by his owner, G. McKendry, who trains him at Meth ven. Burns Night returned his supporters a dividend just on £2O when he finished gamely to beat the unlucky Young Charles in the New Zealand Derby Stakes. Young Charles lost at least 48 yards when he was hampered by the breaking Morano at the start. Te Maru and Farlena broke at the start, and Van Dieman was slow away. Soangetaha was the first to show out from Anitra, Chief Eagle, Casacando, Flight Commander, and Burns Night. M. Holmes soon took Casacando into the lead, and after pacing the first half mile m Imin 5 3-ssec, he slowed the field up, the mile being reached in 2min 14 l-ssec. At this stage Casacando was followed by Anitra, Soangetaha, Chief Eagle, Flight Commander, Burns Night, Van Dieman, Young Charles, Te Maru, Farlena, and Morano. Young Charles’s supporters, who had sent him out first favourite, were jubilant as he made a fast run in the back straight which carried him up to Casacando and Soangetaha. With three furlongs to go these three were racing stride for stride, and there was little between them as they entered the straight, where Burns Night, Flight Commander, and Van Dieman were also prominent. McKendry patiently waited until well into the straight before making his challenge with Burns Night. Once he was allowed to do his best, Burns Night finished well to beat Young Charles by three-quarters of a length. Another two lengths away came Van Dieman, which lost a winning chance when he broke in the last 100 yards. Van Dieman quickly regained his balance, to beat Soangetaha and Casacando in a.photo-finish for third place.

Flight Commander was another unlucky runner in the race. If G. B. Noble could have found an opening for him at a critical stage he might have troubled Burns Night at the finish. A shapely colt. Burns Night is a brother to Gay Piper, which won the Victoria Handicap for McKendry on the first day of the meeting. Both these horses were bred by Mr N. G. Festival, which has one of the shortest pedigrees in the Stud Book, being by Sonoma Harvester from a mare by Prince Imperial, had already produced winners in Jovial to Grattan Loyal, Great Joy to Truman Direct, and Dunmore to U. Scott, before being acquired by Mr Mason. When bought by Mr Mason, Festival was believed to be in foal and she was pampered for the next few months, but the signs proved misleading. In the following season Festival was mated with U. Scott, to whom she produced a colt in 1943. This youngster, which now races as Gay Piper, was bought for £5OO as a yearling by McKendry, who had won

races with his brother, Dunmore. In the 1944 season Festival slipped twins to Gold Paper, and iri 1945 she produced a colt to U. Scott. When he was 10 days old the youngster was bought for £5OO by McKendry. As Burns Night, this colt vindicated his owner’s judgment when he won the New Zealand Derby Stakes. A. good-mannered colt, Burns Night, which earned £520 for minor placings last season, appears to have bright prospects. Young Charles is a model of consistency. After being hampered at the‘start and then being forced to cover some extra ground in order to get a good position, he gave a bold performance to finish second, bringing his record to five wins and two seconds since he began racing. An outstanding youngster. Young Charles should add to his record in the classics later in the season. Acclamation Wins Free-for-AH Backed down to first favourite. Acclamation justified her confident support when she gained her first free-for-all success in the Sockburn Sprint. Toushay, Pardon Me, Beverley Volo, and Desworthy broke at the start. Calumella was the first to show out, and at the end of two furlongs she was leading from Jimmy Dillon, Fantom, Jimmy Scott, Aerial Scott, Will Cary, and Keen Blade. The scene changed quickly when ’Jimmy Dillon broke with just over three furlongs covered. In the mix-up which followed Jimmy Scott, Keen Blade, and Fantom all broke. After this incident. Calumella was leading from Will Cary, Keen Blade, Acclamation. and Toushay. M. C. McTigue set a fast pace with Calumella. which weakened after leading into the straight from Aerial Scott, Acclamation, Great Venture, Keen Blade, Will Cary, and Fan tom. Acclamation always appeared to be going easily, and she carried out to win by three-quarters of a length from the fast-finishing Fantom, with Aerial Scott another two lengths away in third place. A daughter of two fine performers In Certissimus and Raclaim, Acclamation, which finished second to Jimmy Scott in the Avon Handicap on the first day of the meeting, may add the New Zealand Champion Trotting Free-for-All to her record on the concluding day of the meeting. Gantree’s Consistent Record Gantree, one of the most improved pacers this season, brought his record to five wins and a third in his seven starts for the season, when he gained a decisive win in the William Hayward Handicap. On Approval and County Antrim were the slowest to begin. Gantree took the lead from the start, and at the end of five furlongs he was followed by Congo Song. Baby Grand, Trustee, Victory Globe Local Gold, On Approval, County Antrim, Snowflake, Black Machine, and Jackie Guy. Gantree, which paced in an effortless manner, carried on to win without being extended by two lengths from Trustee, which beat On Approval for second in a photo-finish.
