WOMEN'S TITLE MATCHES

GOLF

MISS FLEMING BEATS MISS DUNCAN MRS HOLLIS ELIMINATED (New Zealand Press AssoctaUunj INVERCARGILL, Nov. 6. Two minor surprises in the second round of the New Zealand women’s golf championships played at the Otatara links, Invercargill, on Saturday were the elimination of one of the eight seeded players, Miss J. Duncan (Wanganui), and the defeat of a former champion, Mrs G. W. Hollis (Titirangi). Miss V. Fleming (Christchurch) brought about the eclipse of the Wanganui player, whose form during the tournament had not been equal to her best, and Mrs Hollis was beaten by the hard-hitting Otago woman, Miss M. Elliott, who profited by the approaching and putting lapses of her opponent. The golf was again of a good standard, and a strong westerly breeze proved to be a good test for the majority of the field. All five Australians who survived the first round won their matches, but two of the visitors played erratic golf and Miss Percy, notably, had to fight hard to beat Miss O’Sullivan (Hawera). Miss. Cheney (Victoria) made a magnificent recovery after being 3 down at the turn against a former champion. Mrs Steel (Auckland). Miss Cheney did her final eight holes in 31. two under bogey, to win at the seventeenth.
