IMPRISONED CHURCH LEADER
CARDINAL MINDSZENTY’S HEALTH FAILING (Rec. 9 p.m.) LONDON, October 15. Fifty-seven-year-old Cardinal Mindszenty, the imprisoned Primate of Hungary, is failing in health and mind, and “no longer retains any personal hope of his future.” according to reports quoted by a correspondent of the Associated Press in Rome. Cardinal Mindszenty, who was a vigorous man before he was arrested and tried in February, is reported to be spending much of his time in brooding silence, and refuses to speak to his guards or fellow prisoners. Cardinal Mindszentv refuses to take exercise, and is carried into the prison courtyard each for periods of sunshine. He shows no interest in reading and writing, and finds it increasingly difficult to understand what has happened to him.
