COURT MARTIAL IN BRITAIN
DESERTER AND GUARD SENTENCED (Special Correspondent N.Z.P.A.) (Rec. 7.30 p.m.) LONDON. Oct. 14. A sentence of five years’ imprisonment was imposed at a court martial at Aidershot upon Moss Simons, a former company director, who escaped from the guardroom at the Royal Engineers’ camp in Barton Stacey on June 7. Corporal William Lamport, who was in charge of the guard at the time, and who disappeared with Simons, was sentenced to three years’ imprisonment after evidence had been heard that Simons had offered Lamport £509 as a bribe to facilitate his escape. Lamport wasjalso sentenced to be reduced to the ranks and discharged with ignominy.
At the time of his escape Simons was awaiting confirmation of a sentence of two years’ imprisonment for desertion.
