GERALDINE CLUB

RACING

CIPHER FAVOURED IN SPRINT The Riccarton trainer, G. S. Barr, holds a strong hand in the Squatters' Handicap at the Geraldine spring meeting to-day with Cipher and Theocritus. Cipher won the Flying Handicap at Washdyke last Saturday in the smart time of Imin 11 3-ssec for six furlongs, and his rise in weight from 7-11 to 8-10 may not stop him from winning again. Theocritus was responsible for most of the pace in that race, which was his first for the season. It was not surprising that he faded in the run home, but his fourth was a good effort. The best of the others may be The Hob, a winner at this meeting a year ago, and Terminus, which won his way out of hack class at the Grand National meeting. Terminus likes making his own rules out in front but, with Theocritus in the field, he will not have matters to his liking. Moonlit was no match for Ara Chief in the hurdles at Washdyke last Saturdays but she may open her winning record as a hurdler to-day. Her strongest opponents in the Rangitata Hurdles to be Kiloney (third al Washdyke last Saturday), Periwig, and Vainly. ,: ’ Indiana and Barry, which areXboth trained at Washdyke by W. P. Hogan, are the form favourites for the Ohapi JStakes. Barry was fourth and Indiana sixth in the Spring Stakes at the South Canterbury meeting. Indiana was a place-tetter at Riccarton and Wingatui, and a win for him is overdue. Farrago, a Salmagundi four-year-old mare, is another promising galloper in this field. All Serene showed ability by running second to Ballochmyle in the Taiko Hack Handicap at Washdyke, and she rftay be good enough to win the Raukapuka Hack Handicap. She is a quality filly by Foxbridge from Scotswood, and is raced by her breeder, Mr J. A. Mitchell, of the Santa Rosa Stud, Longburn. Beau Soir and Flying Fort may offer her most opposition to-day. Redlo, which finished third to Marut and Morning Watch in the Clarendon Hack Handicap on the first day of the spring meeting at Wingatui. should run well under 7-10 in the Belfield Hack Handicap. Other form candidates are Pacific Edition, Finance, and Morning Watch. Atomic Star is a capable galloper when in condition, but he has not raced since June, and may not be at his best.
