The Committee appointed at a recent Public Meeting to examine and report upon the form of the Citizens’ Memorial will shortly complete this task. The Committee, which has already’ considered many suggestions, is of the opinion that the great majority of citizens, and, in particular, returned servicemen, do not favour the construction of any further edifice or monumental work, beyond the incorporation of suitable additional inscriptions upon the City's two main Memorials to those who fell in 19141918. Accordingly the committee has endorsed this latter proposal. It also endorses the decision for the Memorial avenue in Burnside road, recognising that many’ utilitarian memorials have been erected or arc in the course of construction throughout the City. The Committee is still open to receive suggestions for any additional memorial. Any citizen who wishes to put forward any’ further proposal or to submit any comment on those already being considered. is asked to forward such proposals in writing, addressed to the Town Clerk, Christchurch, so as to be in his hands not later than the 31st day of OCTOBER. 1949.
