UNEMPLOYMENT ON MERSEYSIDE
CONFERENCE PROPOSED (Rec 7 p.m.) LONDON, October 13. The "Daily Telegraph” says that the Ministries of Labour and Transport will be asked to send representatives to a conference at Liverpool on the problem of growing unemployment in the Merseyside ship repairing industry.
More than 20.000 men were employed on the Merseyside during the war. but the figure has fallen to about 10 000. After those who have sought jobs elsewhere have been excluded about 3200 men are said to be out of work. Of the 30 Admiralty cranes formerly used. 15 have been taken away. The situation will be temporarily eased in the near future by the arrival for overhaul of the liner Caronia (34.000 tons) and of the Scythia (19.000 tons), which will be stripped before going to the Clyde for a rent.
