MR MANUILSKY’S CHARGES
CARDINAL SPELLMAN REPLIES (Rec. 8.40 p.m.) NEW YORK. Oct. 12. The Archbishop of New York (Cardinal Spellman) said to-day that he had not given Cardinal Mindszenty 30,000 dollars for anti-Soviet revolutionary purposes in Hungary. He was replying to the charges made by the Ukrainian Foreign Minister ’ (Mr Dmitri Manuilsky) during the United Nations debate on Monday on alleged violations of fundamental freedoms in Hungary, Bulgaria, and Rumania. Cardinal Spellman said that Mr Manuilsky's charges were “characteristic of a follower of Beelzebub.” Cardinal Spellman, who spoke at New York airport after his return from a visit to Europe, said that Americans had given millions of dollars for the relief of persons in warstricken areas. The money had been used for food, clothing, and medicine. He could not recall any specific transaction involving 30.000 dollars. He added: "If for 30.000 dollars democracy with its freedoms could be secured in any of the countries under Soviet domination, all our soldiers and their relatives would know it was the greatest bargain since Manhattan was bought from the Indians.”
