Mr and Mrs J. L. Hewland and their two children (Kahu road) will leave Wellington by the Dominion Monarch on November 12 for England, where Mr Hewland will take up an exchange position on the teaching staff of Wellingborough Grammar School. Northamptonshire. Mr Duning, a former member of the R.A.F., who is unmarried, will take Mr Hewland’s place at the Christchurch Boys’ H : h School. Mr and Mrs Hewland ex cct to be awa.y from Christchurch for 14 months.

Mrs Gladstone Ward (Bristol street), who has been spending several months in England, will leave early next month on her return journey to Christchurch

Mr and Mrs Geoffrey Hobbs (London) are coming to New Zealand by the Rangitata due about October 23, to visit Mr Hobbs’s parents, Mr and Mrs F. W. Hobbs, Papanui road. Mr Geoffrey Hobbs, who is an architect, has been in England for the last 16 years. His wife is an Englishwoman.

A successful afternoon musical party, arranged by the committee of the Christchurch ’ Harmonic Society Ladies’ Auxiliary, was held at the home of the president (Mrs M. E. Lyons), Papanui road, yesterday. To aid the funds of the choir the sum of £23 was raised. Those who took part in the programme, arranged by Mrs W. E. Olds, were Mrs Linda Haase, Mrs Cara Cogswell and Mr Major Lummis. Mrs Olds was the accompanist. During the afternoon competitions were won by Mrs M. Suckling, Mrs Claude Davies. Mrs R. L. Sutherland and Miss Boot. Mrs Lyons thanked the artists and Mrs Olds.

The wives of members of the New Zealand cricket team aboard the Rangitata. which is expected to arrive from London on October 25. will be taken to Wellington as guests of the New Zealand Cricket Council. There

will be a civic reception and morning tea at Parliament Buildings on October 26.—(P.A.)

Miss Natalie Vale, president of St. Margaret’s College Old Girls’ Association, visited Dunedin recently and formed a branch of the association in that city. The inaugural meeting was held at St. Hilda's Collegiate School and was very well attended. Mrs Brebner (formerly Miss Joyce Harris) was elected president. Miss Barbara Scott secretary-treasurer, and Misses Noeline Vale and Margaret Dougall members of the committee. The first society event of the new branch will be a buffet dinner party to be held towards the end of October. Arranged to aid the funds of the Young Contingent of the Victoria League food for Britain parcels, a successful mannequin parade was held in the D.I.C. tearooms yesterday afternoon. Some of the lovely clothes worn by the mannequins were housecoats, afternoon frocks, coats, tailored suits, and evening frocks complete with silver fox capes. Miss Evie Hayes, star of the “Annie Get Your Gun” company, who opened the parade. was accompanied by many members of the company who were guests of honour and some of whom acted as mannequins. These who took part in the pa rad? were Mesdames William Walker. Tan Guthrie. Lee Seldon, Humphrey Hall. Geoffrey Williams. John Ward. Averil Green, Misses Sylvia Scott. Joy Brewer. Wendy Sei over. Chosen from a large number of applicants among the staff of the Railways Department. Misses Patricia Cole and Joan Lindsay are the first train hostesses to be apponited in the North Island. They will travel in the daylight expresses between Auckland and Wellington, and will make their initial trip from Auckland on October 21. Mrs P. A. M. Heath presided at the monthly meeting of the Lyttelton branch of the Plunket Society. For the month of September Sister Klue, whose district includes Lyttelton, Heathcote. Sister Sybil Kathleen Kelly, of Lavorna Hospital. Remucra. died this week. Born in India, she was the daughter of the late Colonel J. G. Kelly. C.B. of the Indian Army, an A.D.C. to Queen Victoria. In the First World War she served in a military hospital at Walton-on-Thames and later with the Anglo-Russian Hospital Corps at Leningrad and on the Galician front. She was awarded the Russian St. George’s medal for her work. The Sumner branch of the British Sailors’ Society held a successful “book and coin” afternoon recently. Mrs J. E. Mason arranged a programme. assisted by the Mount Pleasant Institute Glee Club and Drama Circle. The items were enjoyed by a large number of members and friends. Miss Geraldine Kean has returned to Wellington after spending two years in Nanking. For the last 10 months she was CORSO representative on the committee of the United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund. She says that a good meal is served daily to destitute children from 55 feeding centres in Nanking. Miss Kean, formerly occupational therapist at the Wellington Hospital, went to China to pioneer occupational therapy at the rehabilitation centre for crippled and disabled children at Nanking. Miss Betty White, a pharmacist who was sent by CORSO to the Kwangchi Hospital at Hungchow, China, also returned to New Zealand this week. Shi? is a daughter of the Rev. B. R. White, Featherston. The lady editor of “The Press” gratefully acknowledges receipt of a generous gift of eggs for the Glenelg health camp from the FernsidcSpringbank branch of the Women's Division of Federated Farmers, also used stamps from a pensioner in Kaikoura, magazines from Graham Roberts and many anonymous friends.
