ASSAULT ON CHILD AGED THREE
MAN CONVICTED AT TIMARU From Cui Own Reporter TIMARU. October 13. Charged with assault on a child aged three years, Charles Gordon Holland, a labourer, aged 39, of Timaru, was ordered to reformative detention for 18 months by Mr E. A. Lee, S.M . in the Timaru Magistrate’s Court this morning. Detective-Sergeant F. R. Hearsey said that the major charge of indecent assault would not be preferred, since the child was too young and reticent to give her evidence in court. He asked that the charge be one of aggravated assault. “It is very difficult to understand how you, a married man with babies of your own, could contemplate such a despicable offence against a baby such as this. The public have to be protected, and you require a period of training,’’ said the Magistrate. An application for the suppression of accused’s name was refused.
