DIOCESAN COUNCIL OF WOMEN
“I hope that the House will not attempt to obstruct this bill,” said the Dean of Christchurch (the Very Rev. A K. Warren) at the annual Synod of the Diocese of Christchurch yesterday, after the first reading of a bill to constitute a Diocesan council of women’s church work. “We are well behind many other countries in the world. If you go to Church Assembly in London you will see striking numbers of women. I do not see manywomen on the floor of this House,’’ added 'the Dean.
The bill was passed. The council will consist of the Bishop of the diocese, ex-officio (chairman), six members elected by Synod, five representatives of church organisations, and five others, of whom one at least must be an educationist. The council will suggest and define avenues of service for women in the church, select and train candidates for various types of work, arrange the training of voluntary workers, and appeal for, collect, and receive money to support objects for which the council is constituted.
The following council was elected: —Mrs A. K. Warren, Miss J. Islipp the Ven. Archdeacon C. L. Mountfort, and the Revs. R. P. Andrews, and C. L. Tanner, and Canon H. M. Codes.
