SHIP LEAVES FOR ANTARCTIC
OF SCIENTIFIC ' PARTY (Rec. 11 p.m.) LONDON. October 12. The John Biscoe, the Falkland Island Dependencies’ 900-ton survey ship, left Southampton yesterday for the Antarctic to relieve 11 scientists who have been isolated for two years on Stonington Island, off south-west Graham Land. Because of pack ice, the John Biscoe was unable to take the scientists off the island last year. This year, the ship is equipped with a steel shoe on her bow to cut through the ice, and she is carrying two aircraft, ar. Auster and a Norseman, to help her to find a way through the pack. The Norseman will be used to evacuate the scientists if the ship is again unable to get through.
