“AT HOME”

GUESTS AT “ RIVERLAW Friends and many women interested in the welfare of the youth of the city were the guests of the matron and committee of the Y.W.C.A. hostel, “Riverlaw,” yesterday afternoon, at an informal “at home,” and they were given the opportunity of seeing over the hostel. “Riverlaw,” formerly the home of the late Colonel G. J. Smith, now accommodates 36 girls between the ages of 15 and 20 years, who are working jn Christchurch.

The visitors saw the girls’ diningroom and sitting-room, the airy, sunny bedrooms, some single, some double, the many bathrooms, the up-to-date kitchen and servery. and the facilities provided for the girls to wash and iron their clothes and store their bi-, cycles.

The girls are encouraged to take an interest in the hostel, and already by holding dances at the hostel they have raised sufficient money to buy a radio set. and are now planning to buy a sewing machine. Mrs J. C. Reade is matron at “Riverlaw,” and she, with Mrs I. T. Woolf (president of the Christchurch Y.W.C.A.), Mrs Owen Mitchell (chairman of the “Riverlaw” hostel committee), and Miss N. Hardie (general secretary). received the guests yesterday, and entertained them at tea.
