ADDINGTON MARKET

FAT CATTLE PRICES HIGHER GOOD DEMAND FOR EWES WITH LAMBS Fat cattle prices were substantially higher at the Addington Market yesterday, but most of tne other principal sections either showed no movement or were cheaper. The continued dry weather over most of the plains is having its influence on the markets, and in the fat sheep, hogget, and spring lamb sales large numbers of stock were included which were beginning to go back in condition. STORE SHEEP The store sheep entry consisted of 994 hoggets, 845 ewes and lambs, and 410 wethers, a total of 2249 against 4048 last week. The hoggets were a fairly even and useful lot, and included only one line in the wool. A large gallery followed the sale, but buying was not active, and prices barely maintained last week’s rates. The pen of woolly wether hoggets made 455. Medium to good shorn ewe hoggets made from 30s to 35s 3d, and others down to 28s. Medium to good wether hoggets made to 35s and others down to 265. A good penning of ewes and lambs was put before buyers, and met a strong demand at prices about 2s a head above those of last week. Good ewes and lambs made 29s to 32s 6d, ordinary 25s to 27s 6d, and culls down to 225. Only one line of adult wethers was offered. The demand for the smaller lines was restrained, and prices were 2s a bead below those of last week. Good made 31s to 355, and others 28s to 30s. SPRING LAMBS There was a further heavy yarding of spring lambs, the total being 329 against 321 a week ago. The tops of 'he yarding were of excellent quality, but lighter lambs showed signs of the dry spell and it was apparent that vendors desired to quit them before they deteriorated further. Largely on account of the big entry values showed a further decline of about one shilling on last week. All lines were saleable, though at reduced rates. A single lamb from J. Hurford (Irwell) made 52s Id. The best quality made up to this level, with good 28s to 435. and medium and light 30s to 375. The principal sales were: On account of M C. Smith (Amberley), 13 at 34s Id to 36s 7d; R. J. Millar (Southbridge), 19 at 42s Id to 44s 7d; W. W. Lowe (Winchmore), 22 at 40s 7d to 43s Id; B. L. Symonds (Waipara). 17 at 40s Id to 44s Id; W. A. Anything showing quality was sought by the trade, but over the whole sale values showed a further drop of from one to two shillings. The highest price of the sale was 51s 7d, which went to Russell Bros. (Loburn) for two. Best quality made from 46s to 51s 7d. good 37s to 445, and medium and light 32s to 365.

FAT CATTLE The entry of fat cattle was 406, against 686 last week, and contained a good showing of high quality beef. The market opened up very strong at prices up to £3 a head above last week for the best steers and heifers, but it weakened later, and finished about on last week’s rates. The average rise was 20s to 30s a head. The sale was patchy, and some cattle sold very dear on the day. Steers made up to £42 17s 6d for three Shorthorn cross from T. Masefield (Gough’s Bay). In the heifer section H. M. Stokes (Hawarden) made £3O 17s 6d and £3O 7s 6d for two. The top price for cows was £27 17s 6d for one from D. Hewitt (Woodend). Prime large runners made to £l6 8s 6d. with others £8 11s Io £ll 8s 6d, best, suckers £7 3s 6d to £lO Ils 6d, medium £4 3s 6d to £6 6s. large calves 42s to 60s, medium 28s to 40s, and small and rough down to 18s. STORE CATTLE The yarding of store cattle was of failsize, and contained several useful lines. Interest in the sale was keener than it was last week, particularly in young cattle, and a good, free sale resulted. Prices were fully firm. Among the quotable lines sold were: 20 three-year Shorthorn cross steers at £l6 6s to £l6 16s, 25 two-year Aberdeen Angus cross steers at £l4 14s 6d to £l5 6s. eight two-year Hereford steers at £l4 18s 6d. 23 18months Aberdeen Angus and Hereford steers at £ll IGs to £l2, and 15 aged Hereford breeding cows in low condition at £9 Is. DAIRY CATTLE The dairy cattle entry numbered 60 head, and was of poor average quality. Except for a few fairly good cattle, interest in the sale was slack, and prices showed no improvement on the modest rates of last week. Best second, third, and fourth calvers made £l2 10s to £l6, average £8 to £l2. and aged and inferior down to £4 10s. The best heifers made from £l3 to £l6 ss, medium from £9 to £l2. and small and backward £6 10s to £8 10s. FAT PIGS The entry of porkers was much smaller than last week's, and consisted mainly of medium and heavy-weights. Competition was very keen and values were better by 5s to 7s a head. Choppers were forward in medium numbers and the easing of last week was fully recovered. In the bacon section, the entry was about 60 head. Competition was very keen and prices rose by 5s to 8s a head. Several P e| i s of over-fat pigs were included, and sold at about £1 a head below good, serviceable pigs. Values were:— Light porkers, £4 14s 6d to £5 2s 6d Medium porkers. £5 4s 6d to £5 14s (id. Heavy porkers, £5 19s 6d to £6 14s 6d. Average price per lb, 13d to 15d. Choppers. £6 16s to £l2 8s 6d. STORE PIGS The yarding of store pigs consisted almost entirely of weaners, with two pens of slips. There were no store pigs at all, a most unusual circumstance. A much smaller attendance of buyers watched the sale, and prices for weaners were easier by 3s to 5s a head. Values were:— Small weaners, 45s to 525. Best weaners. 54s to 60s. Slips. 68s to 78s.
