ST. SAVIOUR'S GUILD

ANNUAL MEETING “While the present high costs continue in this country there is little possibility of our expenditure being very much reduced, and it is likely that unless our income increases our accounts will continue to show large annual deficits. For this reason we ask sincerely for a continuation’ of financial support from parishes and the general public.” said the Primate of New Zealand (Archbishop WestWatson), chairman of St. Saviour’s Guild, in his report presented to the annual meeting of the guild yesterday. Tn spite of an increased deficit, our general position remains sound and actually shows a slight improvement, but once again we are dependent on legacies for the maintenance of our position. Included in legacies received was a farm property at Prebbletcn, which is being held for the future purposes of the guild,” said Archbishop West-Watson. The report said that 105 children were under the guild’s care. Changed social conditions had brought a large number of children from broken homes. These children to some extent were social casualties, and by the very nature of their backgrounds provided considerable problems to the staff in helping and training them. “There is much to be learned in regard to these children, and the increase in their numbers has also resulted in an increase in the responsibilities of the guild.” Shortage of staff had been a serious handicap during the year, said Archbishop West-Watson. While the position had eased a little, there was still an urgent need for senior staff at Timaru. The excess of expenditure over income for the year was £5260. The report said that expenditure for the year increased by £ 1020. but increases in purchases of clothing and salaries and wages more than accounted for this figure. These two items accounted for £1343, and other expenditure was slightly below last year s figures The income was £2ll less than in 1947-1948. and this decrease was due to the drop in receipts from subscriptions and donations, and a reduction. of £lBO in receipts from offertories The other items of income showed slight increases, and the combmed appeal again produced a record figure. In addition to the increase in actual expenditure, the rate of depreciation on buildings was raised from 3 per cent, io 5 per cent., in view of possible heavy expenditure on the imaru Boys’ Home. Further additions to the total deficit were the writing off of the swimming bath and live f at Timaru. and of bad debts totalling £142 Ils lid. The following officers were elected: warden. Archbishop West-Watson: council of the guild, Archbishop Westv.atson (chairman), the Dean of Christchurch (the Very Rev. A. K. •Lrrcn. sub-warden).
