The New York stock market to-day climbed to new high ground for 1949 on a buying wave centred in the shares of railroads and motor-car companies. Gains were from a few cents to round three dollars a share, with some market leaders reaching as high as four dollars. One of the factors in the rise was Wall Street expectation of an early settlement of the coal and steel strikes.
