AUSTRALIAN RACING

OUTSIDERS WIN AT RANDWICK EPSOM HANDICAP TO DENALI (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) i (Rec. 7.30 p.m.) SYDNEY. October 2. In perfect weather conditions on a holding track the Newcastle-trained Denali created a surprise in his own stable when he won the Epsom Handicap at Randwick. Starting at long odds, he beat the favourite, Buzmark, by a length, with another long chance, Wiranya, close up third. A feature of the race was the collapse in the straight of the favoured Count Aulone, which, though" advantageously handicapped, refused to fight on. Count Aulone led into the straight, but in the last furlong the race was between Denali and Buzmark, with Wiranya coming sensationally into the picture. Another shock was administered by the colt Playboy, who made turf history by winning the A.J.C. Derby as a maiden performer. It was his ninth start, but pi eviously Playboy had distinguished himself only by a marked proclivity for sleeping and eating. His trainer said he had been kicked into wakefulness at noon to be taken to the course. In the Derby, however. Playboy triumphed over early interference which almost threw the jockey, Moore, from the saddle. He stayed well under control, however, and finished powerfully to beat the favourite. Delta, by a good margin. By decisively beating the well-favoured Carbon Copy in the Colin Stephen Slakes, Vagabond became the outright favourite for the Melbourne Cup. The race was oddly run, with Cronides racing away to establish a long lead. Vagabond led the chase and had his measure with a furlong to go. Carbon Copy just failed to catch Cronides, and was himself nearly pegged back by the New Zealander. King’s Ransom, which was prominent throughout. Results:— TRIAL STAKES, Of £lOOO. Chiquita recorded her fourth successive win by an effortless performance in the Edward Manifold Stakes at Flemington. She is entered for the Thousand Guineas at Caulfield, Wakeful Stakes, and the Oaks. In the Manifold Stakes she was at top for not more than a furlong, during which she moved out into a commanding lead.
