SOFTBALL
OPENING OF SEASON The Christchurch Softball Association opened its season on Saturday by holding grading matches. The competition, for which 54 teams have entered, will be run in senior and junior divisions for both men and women. Schoolboys’ matches will be played on Saturday mornings. The South Island’s defeat of the North Island last year and the proposal to hold the New Zealand championships in Christchurch next year have caused increased interest in the sport. Results of Saturday’s games were:— Men.—Avon Royals B 30, Burnham 10; P.Y.P.C. A 32. McGuiness Gymn. 11; P.Y.P.C. B 21, Watersiders B 20; Christchurch 6. Richmond 5: Wigram A 20. Avon Royals A 5; Weedons 43, Spreydon B 18; Training College 18. Watersiders 12. Women.—Seagulls A 23. Cardinals 4; Seagulls B 27. State Fire 22; Linwood B 25, Barlows 10; Spreydon 19. Seagulls C 10: Kiwi 13, Avon Royal 12: Monowai 11, Hays 9.
