. ♦ OPENING DAY AT LYTTELTON The yachting season began at Lyttelton on Saturday, when the Canterbury Yacht ' and Motor-boat Club held its opening day. The Lyttelton Marine Band was in ' attendance, and several hundreds of ' members and supporters were present. In declaring the season open the president of the club, Mr W. T. Lester, said that much work would be required this season in improving the accommodation, but he was confident that there was sufficient enthusiasm among the members to accomplish this. Two new yachts, the • Haze and Saxon, had been launched that ■ morning, and several more would join i the fleet, soon. I The Mayor (Mr F. G. Briggs) said that yachtsmen would have a major job in ' preparing for the Canterbury centennial. He wished the club a successful season. An open handicap race was held, the start being at 3.15 p.m.. »and the result was:—Scandal (G. Marder), 3Jmin, 3.59.10 p.m., 1; Panic (P. Mander). imin, 3.58.59, 2; Haze (T. Shields), scr, 4.26.0, 3.
