ST. GEORGE'S HOSPITAL
♦ NEW WING OPENED A new wing on the east side of St. George’s Hospital was opened on Saturday. No addition has been built on to the hospital. The wing was formerly used for junior nurses’ accommodation. but in 1948 the juniors moved into a new building, Wilford House. The section was then converted for the use of patients. The feature of the wing is the Bishop Family Children’s Ward, which will take six children up to the age of 10 or 11. Beds in the ward will be screened by curtains on fixed rods as is done in adult wards. Each child has a locker and a drawer in the wardrobe. A microphone system has been installed to connect with the duty room for use in the evening so that the nurse will hear calls or crying easily. The lady superintendent (Miss E. E. Williams) believes that the Bishop Family children’s ward is the first children’s ward in a private hospital in New Zealand.
