AUSTRALIAN COACH ARRIVES The Australian professional lawn tennis player, Dinny Pails, arrived in Christchurch by steamer express yesterday morning. Pails, whose visit to New Zealand was arranged by the New Zealand Lawn Tennis Association, has coaching engagements with most of the major associations. He will spend three weeks in Christchurch. On arrival at Lyttelton yesterday with his wife and infant son, Pails was met by the secretary of the Canterbury association (Mr J. M Hargreaves), the chairman of the management committee (Mr J. K. Burtt), and Messrs G. Atkinson, D. Martin, and A. D. Brown, members of a committee which is making arrangements for his stay in Christchurch. Pails has just completed a coaching programme in Wellington. He will go to Timaru when his Christchurch engagement is over and will conclude his tour in Auckland, where he will a month.
WAIMAIRI CLUB The Waimairi Tennis Club’s season was opened on Saturday by Mr A. Syme, the pation of the club. The club president (Mr W. H. Jones) said that the opening coincided with the opening of two new courts. With 320 members, the club was the second largest in Christchurch. Mi F. H. G. Johnstone, for the Canterbury Lawn Tennis Association, presented the shield to the senior reserve team, and congratulated the club on retaining the trophy for two years in succession. Sumner Club The Sumner Lawn Tennis Club was officially opened for the season on Saturday. The president, Mr R. L. Hutchinson, spoke concerning the club’s’ progress during the previous year. Mr R. N. C. Hill spoke on behalf of'the Canterbury Lawn Tennis Association. Mrs P. Fenwick declared the season open. Trophies were presented by Mrs R. L. Hutchinson as follows:—men’s championship singles, P. W. Murdoch; women’s championship singles, Mrs W. Wood; men’s handicap singles, N. Main; women’s handicap singles, Miss M. Nicol; men’s handicap doubles. T. and R. Coulson; women’s handicap doubles. Miss A. Collins and Mrs M. Roberts; boys’ junior championship, Graham Stevens; girls’ junior championship, Maureen Idle; most improved boy junior, Ross Allen; most improved girl junior, Anne Kirkpatrick.
