KAIAPOI OPEN TOURNAMENT

C. W. CALDWELL WINS SENIOR TITLE The Kaiapoi Golf Club's open championship tournament, played during the weekend under ideal conditions, attracted a large entry. The senior championship was won by C. W. Caldwell, with rounds of 72 and 73. and J. W. Jackson was run-ner-up. with rounds of 72 and 75. Both men did the morning round in bogey figures. 72 strokes, and these were the best rounds of the tournament. The intermediate title went to G. J. Templeton with two rounds of 78 and D. J. Barkle was runner-up with rounds of 78 and 80. R. G. Stead won the junior A championship with a total of 163, and G. Mole won the junior B with a gross score of 173. October 1 The Australian open golf championship at Kensington course ended in the biggest upset in Australian golf history when Eric Cremin, six strokes behind the titleholder. H O. f*ickworth, at the beginning of the last round, snatched a win with a brilliant 63. Pickworth was later disqualified for a breach of the rules, which according to an official statement.; cast no reflection on his sportsmanship. At the last of the tournament's 72 holes Pickworth hit tv.o balls into a large artificial lake and took eight for the par four hole. The match committee ruled that he had infringed ihe "casual water’’ rule and had incurred penalty strokes which were not added to his score.
