OBITUARY

MR L. L. RICHARDS Mr Leslie Lawrence Richards. a sheep-farmer of Mount Hutt, collapsed and died in the secretary’s office before the first race at the Methven Trotting Club’s course on Saturday. He was one of the club’s two vice-presidents and a judicial steward. Throughout the day llags were flown at half-mast. In 1919. Mr Richards, with his iate brother. Mr S. E. Richards, took over the Mount Hutt Station in the Rakaia Gorge, but in 1938. when the station was divided in two, the partnership was dissolved. Mr Richards was a prominent figure in the district and took an active interest in local affairs. Mr Richards represented the Mount Hutt riding on the Ashburton County Council and was chairman of the Methven Memorial Hall Committee, and he an active member of the Returned Services’ Association. He was a Past Master of the Methven Masonic Lodge, of which he was a foundation member. Mr Richards is survived by his widow and two sons.

MR J. MCCLEARY (New Zealand Press Association.) ■WELLINGTON. September 30. Mr James McCleary, aged 84, one ©f the few remaining links with the early days of New Zealand Rugby, died' this week. He played his football in the 1880’s. Mr McCleary was first associated With the Alhambra Club ’Dunedin). He later played in Wellington. He was the father of Brian McCleary, a member of the All Black team which toured Britain in 1924.

MR C. W. MCMILLAN ' (New Zeeland Press Association.) AUCKLAND. October 1. The death occurred early this morn£ng of Mr Charles William McMillan, aged 40. president of the Auckland Journalists’ Union. Mr McMillan, who was deputy chief reporter of the “Auckland Star” and editor of the diggers’ page, had been in journalism more than 20 years. During the war he was a member of the 2nd N.Z.E.F., completing his military service with the rank of captain. He served for a great part of his career in the “Dominion” in Wellington and as branch manager in the Wairarapa. He was married last year and is Survived by his widow.
