STIPENDS OF CLERGYMEN
Sir,—Osmund D. Somerfield clearlj believes that clergymen should be able to clothe and feed themselves belle: than common labourers, suggestin' that stipends should at least be £5OO Assuredly he overlooked the fact tha most of the commodities of this life are the result of labour, and .herefon those who render true service shouk receive the higher incomes. Did no Christ send His disciples out as Tibour ers to the lost sheep, to the harvest saying the labourer is worthy of hi: hire? And having sent them cut with dsn of Korurltv. He fisked then later if they lacked anythin! and - < replied, nothing. When or; looks at the average congregation >f regular attenders and considers tint probably very few of their incomes are ever near that £5OO, it seems un-Christian-like and sheer hypocrisy to suggest it. —Yours, etc., F. H. ENGLEBRECHT. Oxford, September 30, 1949.
