EMPIRE BOXING TITLE

DAVE SANDS BEATS DICK TURPIN

LONDON, September 6. The Australian triple boxing champion. Dave Sands, to-night became the British Empire middle-weight titleholder when he knocked out the Englishman, Dick Turpin, in the first round of a fight at the Harringay

Stadium. Turpin had won the title from the New Zealander, Bos Murphy. Sands weighed list 51b and Turpin list 3ilb. A capacity house saw the fight, which began quietly, with Sands feeling out Turpin. Within half a minute of the start. Sands clipped Turpin with a left, and followed up with a battery of lefts and rights to the head and body. Turpin went down under this terrific battering about 40 seconds after the round began. He stayed down for a count of nine. When he got up Sands rushed him all round the ring with lefts and rights, mainly to the body, none of which Turpin could block. Turpin went down a second time from a terrific onslaught while on the ropes, and just got up at the count of nine. Sands eased up a little, but obviously was measuring Turpin, who made no attempt to fight back. When Sands got going again he forced Turpin into a corner and belted him to his knees. Turpin fell to the canvas. He got to his knees at the count of six. tried to rise at nine, but failed and was counted out. The bout lasted for two minutes 45 seconds. Turpin retains his British title.
