OTTAWA VALLEY AND TRIDALE

WATERSIDERS LIFT BAN REQUEST FROM CANADIAN SEAMEN’S UNION (New Zealand Press Association.) WELLINGTON, September 7. The ban on the Canadian freighters Ottawa Valley (at Auckland) and Tridale (at Wellington) was lifted to-day by the national executive of the New Zealand Waterside Workers’ Unioh. The executive has directed the Auckland and Wellington branches of the union to put this decision into effect. This decision followed the receipt of a cabled request from the Canadian Seamen’s Union headquarters at Montreal, asking the union to lift the ban and thanking NeW Zealand waterside workers for the part they had played in (‘the struggle against anti-Labour ship-owners.” Work on unloading the Ottawa Valley will proceed as soon aS employers call for labour. Negotiations are expected for the return of the crew of the Tridale to their ship, -which has been idle since April 14. The national secretary of the Waterside Workers' Union (Mr T. Hill) said this evening that he had received a cable from Mr Harry Davis, president of the Canadian Seamen’s Union, of which the Tridale crew are members. The message was: “The national executive of our union has decided to call off the black ban on the Canadian ships in New Zealand and are requesting the Canadian crew to return with their ship to continue the Struggle in Canada and therefore request you to release the Canadian ships. On behalf of the striking seamen we wish to express the deepest gratitude to you and the membership of the New Zealand Waterside Union for the magnificent support and solidarity of action extended over a long period in oUr bitter fight against anti-Labour shipowners and the Government. Your action has held high trade union principles and strengthened the bonds of unity between the workers of New Zealand and Canada and the solidarity of world Labour.”
