Major-General Sir Howard Kippenberger and Lieutenant-Colonel K. W. Fraser, president and vice-president of the New Zealand Returned Services’ Association, have left New Zealand for Ottawa, where they will represent New Zealand at a conference of Empire former servicemen’s organisations. While in Ottawa Sir Howard Kippenberger will be the guest of the Gov-ernor-General, Lord Alexander. Later he will visit the American War History Department in Washington, and for a few days will be the guest of the American Army in an inspection of some of the battlefields of the Civil War. Sir Howard Kippenberger and Colonel Fraser will return on October 2.

The senior Magistrate at Auckland, Mr J. H. Luxford, began two months’ sick leave this week. It will be followed by six months’ sabbatical leave and he will leave for Australia on November 1. He will return to his duties at the end of his sabbatical leave. During Mr Luxford’s absence the duties of senior Magistrate will be undertaken by Mr S. L. Paterson, S.M., of Hamilton. He in turn will be relieved by Mr W. H. Freeman, S.M., of Katikati.— (P.A.)

Dr. B. Elwood Montgomery, of Purdue University, Indiana, has arrived in New Zealand to study the habits of the bumble bee. He will work at the Cawthron Institute, Nelson, under a Fulbright award. — (P.A.) Mr N. de V. Lawrence, assistant accountant to the Lyttelton Harbour Board, will leave on Monday to take up an appointment as accountant to the Timaru Harbour Board. He was congratulated on his appointment, and thanked for his 12 years of service, at a meeting of the Lyttelton Harbour Board yesterday. Mr David G. .Volkmann, of San Francisco, an enthusiastic fisherman, will visit New Zealand in January with a party of six and spend about 20 days in the North and South Islands. The party is due at Auckland by air on January 15.—(P.A.)
