GENERAL ELECTION
Sir, —My reaction to “Observer’s” statements that “Britain would have 2.500.000 unemployed if it were not for American aid,” is surprise that anyone could believe such propaganda; even Labour leaders, who apparently have become innoculated with Wall street financiers’ abject fear of the new era —Socialism. If Britain would use the money now needlessly thrown away on military adventures, there would be no unemployment or dollar shortage. I condemn our New Zealand Tory and Labour leaders for urging the spending of £17.000,000 annually on military training, and then wishing to borrow from capitalist America. America would enjoy getting a financial grip of New Zealand, while we would have American goods dumped here, our own industries idle, unemployment rife. I suggest our Labour leaders join the Opposition ranks, and leave younger Labour members to proceed with Labour s promised policy. I still vote Labour, hoping for its return to common sense. —Yours, etc., H.S. August 30. 1949.
