CO-ORDINATION OF TRANSPORT
APPOINTMENT OF COUNCIL fNeto Zealand Press Association.) WELLINGTON. August 24. The Transport Co-ordination Council memoership was announced to-day by the Minister of Transport (Mr F. Hackett) as follows:—Commissioner of Transport (Mr G. L. Laurcnson), who will be chairman, the general manager of the railways (Mr F. W Aickin). the Secretary of Marine (Mr W. C. Smith), the Air Secretary (Mr T. Barrow). the Commissioner of Police (Mr J. Cummings), the chairman of directors of the National Airways Corpor■ation (Sir Leonard Isittg, Captain S. Holm, of Wellington (on the nomination of the New Zealand Shipowners’ Federation), Messrs L. B. Hutton of Wellington (representing local authorities and public bodies who are owners of transport). F. G. Tebay. of Napier (to represent private owners of passenger transport services). G J. Mahon, of Auckland (to represent private owners of motor goods trans) services), J. C. Adams, of Wellington (on the nomination of Federated Farmers), J. A. Barton, of Frank . ; n Junction (to represent railway workers’ organisations). F. P. Walsh, of Wellington (to represent maritime workers’ organisations). P. A. Hansen, of Wellington (to represent the tramways union). A. C. Melville, of Wellington (to represent the New Zealand Drivers’ Union), and W. W. Hynes, of Palmerston North (to represent persons employed in the air transport industry). Mr Hackett said the functions of the council were to make inquiries into and report on and make recommendations concerning such matters as might from time to time be referred to it by the Minister, and to institute of its own motion inquiries into any matter affecting public transport ot , any kind, and to make reports and recommendations thereon to the Minister.
Mr Hackett said one of its first tobs would be to report on the co-ordina-tion and development of lone-disnnce road passenger services in New Zealand.
