PARLIAMENTARY DAY
(From Our Parliamentary Reporter.) WELLINGTON, August 9. The House of Representatives did a useful day’s work to-day. After the usual questions that mark the beginning of a new week, the House continued the pedestrian debate on the Forestry Bill, to which Mr W. H. Gillespie (Opposition. Hurunui) gave some South Island interest by criticising various aspects of State Forest Service administration at Balmoral and Eyrewell The bill was read a second time and referred to the Lands Committee. The work of catchment boards figured prominently in the discussion of the Sheep Industry Commission’s report this evening, and those members who expressed an opinion supported the boards. On the broader issues. Mr R. G. Gerard (Opposition, Ashburton) was critical of the proposals made by Mr F. P. Walsh for a 25 per cent, increase in primary production. Two new bills came in during the day. one a railways consolidation measure. and the other a Mining Amendment Bill, of apparent!}’ minor significance.
