NOTTS 154 FOR THREE

GOOD BOWLING BY BURKE N.Z. DECLARES AT 329 FOR FOUR (From A. W. MITCHELL, Special Correspondent N.ZJ*.A.) (Rec. 2 a.m.) NOTTINGHAM, August 9. New Zealand declared its first innings closed with the score 329 for four when the final day’s play against Nottinghamshire began this morning. At lunch Nottinghamshire was 154 for three. Burke took the three wickets. With Reid again deputising for Mooney as wicket-keeper, Hadlee opened the bowling with Cave and Cresswell. Simpson and Keeton began scoring freely, putting on 21 in the first 15 minutes. They improved this to 35 after 30 minutes. Simpson turned Cresswell to leg for two to put 51 on the board and registered his two thousandth run for the present season. With the total at 75 Keeton played on to Burke. Burke had his second success when he caught and bowled Simpson with the score at 90, of which Simpson had made 42. Burke was bowling very well on the pitch, which was giving him no assistance. Hardstaff joined Poole and 103 came up 'With four leg byes after 97 minutes. Burke got his third wicket when Hardstaff snicked one to Burtt.

Rabone and Reid established a record partnership in England yesterday when they put., on 246 for the third wicket. The previous record was a stand of 164 by Page and Lowery against Sussex in 1927. Reid and Rabone began slowly on a perfect pitch and Reid raced Rabcne to the century: then in 25 minutes of delightful batting he added 55 (26 4’s and one 6). It was Rabone’s first century of the tour, and he batted very soundly with some graceful shots for 120 not out in shrs 20min (ten 4’s).

Twenty-three centuries have nowbeen scored by the team during the tour, including two double centuries. Scott and Rabone opened and faced Jepson and Woodhead. They scored a run a minute until Scott was run out. Mooney came in at first wicket, looked at the ball for half an hour and then began to use his feet and hit. He rammed a full toss from Harvey straight down through to Stocks at nfid-on just when he was nicely set. At lunch the score was two for 65 (Rabone-28). For the next hour Rabone and Reid were as slow and sopnd as Hardstaff and Harris had been on Saturday; and the crowd slow-clapped them too. Rabone reached 50 in 2hrs lOmin and Reid in Ihr 45min. In three hours Reid reached his century and Rabone turned Stocks to leg for his century, which took 4hrs 25min. Reid showed all his shots —pull, hook, cut and off-drive, and the second 100 of the partnership arrived in only 75 minutes. Reid added 45 in 19 minutes, and was then dropped by Jepson off Harris on the mid-on boundary. He promptly straight-drove Harris and so added 51 in 20 minutes. The next over he was caught on the boundary behind the wicket by Poole. Smith was run out by a sharp return from Harvey jvithout addition to the score.’ Scares: — NOTTINGHAMSHIRE
