OVERSEAS LEAGUE

LADY FREYBERG’S VISIT “Will you lend me a thimble?” said her Excellency, Lady Freyberg, when she joined the sewing group of the Overseas League in the Empire Societies’ rooms, Cathedral square, late yesterday afternoon. Several thimbles were promptly offered and one was used to goodjeffect by her Excellency. L Since at this group have meWortnightly :and have made hundreds ef warm garments to be sent overseas for distribution. To show her appreciation of»their generosity, Lady Freyberg paid the group an informal visit ana thanked them for their kindness to harassed women, especially mothers, in England. She was received by Mrs H. W. Royds, who for many years directed the group’s activities, and by Mrs B. H. Stewart, who has recently taken her place. Miss G. G. Greenstreet presented a shoulder spray to Lady Freyberg, who was wearing a deep ruby red coat over a matching frock, beige furs, and a ruby felt hat trimmed with self-coloured taffeta loops. Lady Freyberg said the work of the group was well worth while, not only for its concrete value, which was great, but for the encouragement the kind thought brought to women m England. Conditions in Britain, she

said, were not getting easier quickly, and in a world where there was much malice, envy and selfishness it was heartening to find so much kindness and unselfishness and thought for others as was shown by many women in New Zealand. Miss E. Dunsmore, on behalf of those present, thanked Lady Freyberg for sparing time on a very busy day to visit the Overseas League and meet the members.
