AUSTRALIAN IMPORTS OF TOBACCO
CANBERRA. July 18. The Federal Government has directed importers of American tobacco to reduce substantially their dollar expenditure in the next 12 months. The cut is expected to cause a severe shortage of Australian cigarettes and tobacco by Christmas, unless the importers buy lower grades of tobacco leaf from the dollar area.
Brawl in Persian Parliament.—A meeting of the Persian Parliament ended in an uproar after the introduction of an amendment to permit women to vote. The deputy who proposed the amendment was attacked by three deputies representing "loslem religious interests, and a brawl started, with dozens of deputies exchanging kicks and punches.—Teheran, July 17.
